Mapping Independent Triangulation of Parametric Surfaces

چکیده
Triangulation of parametric surfaces is important for visualization and finite element analysis. The wrong choice of parameterization can spoil a triangulation or even cause the algorithm to fail. We present a new method that uses a local inverse mapping for almost uniformly sampling and triangulating a surface, so that its parameterization becomes irrelevant; differential geometry provides almost all we need.

A mapping-independent primitive for the triangulation of parametric surfaces
This paper describes a new technique for the triangulation of parametric surfaces. Most earlier methods sample the parameter domain, and the wrong choice of parameterization can spoil the triangulation or even cause the algorithm to fail. Conversely, we use a local tessellation primitive to sample and triangulate the surface. The sampling is almost uniform and the parameterization becomes irrel...
متن کاملDelaunay Triangulation for Curved Surfaces
Surface triangular meshing plays an important role in the areas of computer graphics and engineering analysis. Traditionally, surface meshing is achieved by mapping meshes created in 2D parametric space onto surfaces. Care is taken in generating meshes in the parametric space and mapping them to surfaces because the transformation of geometry from the parameter space to the real space could be ...
متن کاملGenerative CSG Models for Real Time Graphics
Generative parametric CSG models, introduced by Snyder in 1992, have many desirable properties. Their functional representation is generally quite compact and resolution independent, since surfaces are represented as piecewise continuous functional programs. However, in practice they have proven impractical for real time rendering because of the difficulty of compactly and exactly representing ...
متن کاملMinimal energy surfaces using parametric splines
We explore the construction of parametric surfaces which interpolate prescribed 3D scattered data using spaces of parametric splines defined on a 2D triangulation. The method is based on minimizing cettain natura1 energy expressions. Several examples involving filling hoies and crowning surfaces are presented, and the role of the triangulation as a Parameter is explored. The problem of creating...
متن کاملDirect Triangulation of 3D Surfaces Using the Advancing Front Technique
A robust and eecient algorithm for discretization of tensor product polynomial surfaces is presented. The advancing front technique operating directly on the surface in the physical space is employed. This avoids diiculties with the anisotropic trian-gulation of parametric space of these surfaces and also guarantees the creation of well shaped triangles even in case of degenerated or badly para...
